Beginnings of the 2010 Kentucky Derby Superfecta chase

In Horse Racing on March 22, 2010 at 5:46 pm

My cohorts of Brad Lystra (aka tower defense) and Dave Hoffman (aka the hoffinator) joined me this weekend to absorb beer, basketball, and a derby prep in the Florida Derby. We chased a few bets including a superfecta riding on Rule to win with several horses under him. Rule finished 3rd with a fairly impressive come-from-last victory by Ice Box. Every handicapper needs a narrative of how they think the race will play and we were pretty close this weekend in our thinking that the race would unfold with a fast pace that would wear out Rule and Miner’s Revenge. What we couldn’t figure out was who would catch them… Barbaro’s untested brother? (finished 4th) Rick Pitino’s slow and steady Soaring Empire (didn’t finish in the money) or maybe Pleasant Prince who was steadily improving? Well the Prince paid a nice price to place, but it was Ice Box who never really showed up on our pre-race radar. And with that, he’s now a derby contender on everyone’s radar.

I think it’s fair to say none of the Florida Derby participants will make a good showing over the Churchill Downs track come the first Saturday of May, and I doubt we’ll see many of them. Pleasant Prince does get better race by race but this was a slow stretch in the Florida Derby and I have to think the elite horses will carry the day and not any from this group.

2009 was the busiest year of my life. It included starting my first business (GiveAndDate.com) to producing another web 2.0 start-up for a client in New York City. Meanwhile, I travelled to places like Sarajevo, Budapest, Athens, Kithira, Montreal, San Francisco, Vermont, New Hampshire, Chicago, and of course a few trips back home to Kentucky. There was plenty of personal drama along the way and few boring moments. Needless to say, this blog was severely neglected and I realize I need to apply one of my golden rules of life to this space: if I don’t use something for 365 days, it has to be given away… with a few caveats for anything sentimental. Well, it hasn’t been quite a year since my last post, but long enough to realize I need to take this in a more useable direction. The blog needs to be for me instead of an audience (not that my game design posts had much of an audience). So without further adieu, please welcome the new mission of Superfected:

Superfected is a blog dedicated to those dreams we pursue — both sharred and personal, important and frivolous, attainable or not — as we all strike up for a better world. That being said (any girlfriend will tell you “that being said” is one of my catch phrases), I intend to post all kinds of good stuff on here that relates to my life… since most of my life is a series of pursuits. I hope you enjoy following along.

My name is Charley and thanks for reading.

Nice to see mainstream press picking up on the other side of athletic competition and non-digital game design. Now would be time for me to plug the Come Out & Play Festival in NYC which is coming up in June.
